What a cash register costs over 3 years: four worked examples
Updated 13 Oct 2026 · KasseTally
Four cases, calculated with the prices of the price lists read on 13 October 2026 and rounded to the euro. Each example opens in the calculator with a link, so you can change the values. Prices exclude VAT as the vendors state them; for orderbird MINI the page does not say whether they include VAT [7].
A kiosk in Germany: 500 € a month by card
Over three years 18,000 € go through by card. Open the example in the calculator.
| Offer | Total over 3 years |
|---|---|
| SumUp Kasse with Solo Lite reader | 683 € |
| orderbird MINI | at least 1,245 € |
| ready2order on your own device with SumUp Solo | 2,293 € |
| ready2order readyMini with readyPay | 2,464 € |
| orderbird PRO, package S | at least 3,596 € |
With low takings the subscriptions count most: SumUp has no fee for the basic software [2], while ready2order’s yearly subscription and TSE package alone come to 1,864.80 € over three years [5].
A café in Germany: 3,000 € a month by card
Over three years 108,000 € go through by card. Open the example.
| Offer | Total over 3 years |
|---|---|
| SumUp Kasse with Solo Lite reader | 1,934 € |
| orderbird MINI | at least 2,226 € |
| ready2order on your own device with SumUp Solo | 3,544 € |
| ready2order readyMini with readyPay | 3,571 € |
| orderbird PRO, package S | at least 3,596 € |
At this level SumUp’s payment subscription does not pay off yet: the threshold is about 3,167 € a month with consumer cards only [1], as we explain in when the subscription pays off.
A coffee bar in Germany: 8,000 € a month by card
Over three years 288,000 € go through by card. Without the share of business cards the result cannot say which cash register costs least: SumUp costs from 3,392 to 4,436 € depending on customers’ cards, and orderbird PRO (at least 3,596 €) and orderbird MINI (at least 4,188 €) may cost less, because for them prices are missing or there is only a «from» price [7] [8]. Open the example.
With consumer cards only SumUp with the subscription costs 3,392 € and the result names it: same example with a 0% share. The difference between the two cases shows how much knowing the share of business and premium cards matters.
A shop in Austria: 3,000 € a month by card
| Offer | Total over 3 years |
|---|---|
| helloCash Basic with SumUp Solo Lite reader | 2,311 € |
| ready2order on your own device with SumUp Solo | 3,404 € |
| ready2order readyMini with readyPay | 3,431 € |
helloCash costs 9.90 € a month plus 139.90 € a year of signature costs [9]; the fees are SumUp’s for Austria [4]. For helloCash the calculation uses your own smartphone, tablet or computer: if you need to buy one, its cost must be added.
What these examples do not say
They do not say which cash register does what your business needs: the configurations have different features. Nor do they count the printer, receipt paper, cash drawer, installation or paid support. The details of each offer are in the comparison of price lists.
